River of No Return

Co-Stars: Robert Mitchum, Rory Calhoun

Marilyn's Character: Kay Weston

Director: Otto Preminger

Synopsis: A saloon singer (Marilyn) in a goldrush town in the Pacific Northwest winds up battling a raging river when her gambler boyfriend steals a horse and leaves her with the owner (Robert Mitchum) and they are chased off their land by an Indian war party.

Marilyn filmed River of No Return in the Canadian Rockies. It was her first western, and in her own opinion not a very good one. During filming she twisted her ankle during a scene in the river, bringing Joe DiMaggio to her side as she hobbled around on crutches. Some say the injury was Marilyn's way of getting back at director Otto Preminger, with whom Marilyn didn't get along.

Reviews:

There's no doubt that Miss Monroe means every bit of business that she's required to do in the adventure yarn, but the heavily dramatic elements of the film are just a little too much for her at this point in her acting career. ~Los Angeles Examiner

There is something at once incongruous and strangely stimulating in Miss Monroe's dazzled and dazzling antics in the surroundings of nature. ~New York Post

It is a toss-up whether the scenery of the adornment of Marilyn Monroe is the feature of greater attraction in River of No Return. ~New York Times
