To Sleep and Live

I was not prepared
sneaking through the silent night I came upon you
dressed in white I thought you an angel
Time was suspended there
and I held you close to me, I whispered your name

I trickled through the cracks in the story
pulled myself into the pain in your eyes
saw you so beautiful, there was music in your step
I asked you to be my friend
If only to turn your sweet smile upon me

I came too late
but once known there is no turning back
You took my hand, clumsily I followed your grace
and the long nights you suffered I knew so well
the peace you sought I made my quest

I woke from the dream - you did not
Choking on the pills and the lies I pulled myself back
with my eyes closed I heard your laugh
and there was never anyone like you
I hold to you as life
